Meditations is a solo flute record that, like its name implies, leans heavily toward ethereal, weightless new age washes of sound. At 11 tracks in just over 30 minutes, the individual pieces don't stretch out for ages the way so many similar albums do; this relative concision means that there's a broader variety of sounds here than one might expect.
Tobias Katz's use of Asian bamboo flutes and Native American wooden flutes in addition to the traditional European model also keeps the album from sounding too samey. That said, it's still an album of meditative flute solos, so there's only so much dynamic tension to be found in this music. Pleasant but slight,
Meditations serves its intended purpose nicely, but without much personality. ~ Stewart Mason
