The disco chanteuse's strongest solo set, Midnight Explosion is a well-rounded, softly funky serving of floor fillers. Producer Michael Kunze borrows liberally from his funk and dance peers -- "Dancing With the Night Tribe" uses horn riffs similar to Kool & the Gang's "Open Sesame," while "Hypnotic Love" bears traces of Giorgio Moroder's work with Donna Summer. The melodies of each tune are brightly distinctive, however, and the tight rhythm section plugs ample energy into each setting.
McLean once again proves herself the most able vocalist to emerge from
Silver Convention, as she glides with subtle sass through the title track, conveys earnest sweetness on "I Need a Friend," and pumps diva attitude into the multi-hued "Backstreet Angel," despite a few diction problems. With varied tempi, sprightly track sequences, and lively arrangements that both
McLean and the band have fun with, Midnight Explosion is a consistently enjoyable listen.
