Sandy Sasso, a veteran singer based in New Jersey, has a warm and deep voice along with an accent that seems impossible to trace. On her debut recording she is joined on a few selections by
the Nelson Riddle Orchestra (under the direction of
Christopher Riddle) and is also heard with some overlapping small groups; some of the selections were recorded live at a club.
Sasso has likable phrasing and does a good job with the lyrics, swinging lightly without taking many liberties. She sounds a bit out of place on "Ain't Nobody Here but Us Chickens" (which is closely associated with
Louis Jordan) and some of the other selections have been revived a bit too often through the years, but her spirit and lively approach work well. Hopefully she will be recording more in the future.
