Singer/songwriter
Deb Pasternak makes an intriguing bow with
More, her first album. While definitely a contemporary folk singer,
Pasternak fills her record with jazzy flourishes and even some horn solos here and there, and her songs bear the stamp of artists usually classified as rock, such as
Neil Young,
Joni Mitchell and
Rickie Lee Jones. The jazz tinges don't always work --
Pasternak occasionally oversteps her bounds, since she is essentially a folk singer -- but more often than not, they make for a fairly distinctive sound that, along with her well-crafted lyrics, holds much promise for the future. ~ Steve Huey
