Antonio Carlos Jobim was one of the greatest Brazilian composers and the father of bossa nova, so it's not surprising that guitarist
Mario Adnet should return for another trip through the man's back catalog. Once more, there's plenty of brass on the pieces, but it's never loud -- it's employed in a way that speaks of ‘50s cool jazz and bossa nova itself, with trombonist
Vittor Santos a standout, adding a shimmering luster to "Boto," for instance.
Adnet is a laid-back leader, and in addition to the band, his wife and daughter are also involved here. The selections vary between the well-known, like "Wave," and the obscure, and are given treatments vastly different from the originals, bringing in accordion here and here, and giving the brass a vital role in each piece. It's a beautiful, smooth-as-cream outing that captures the essence of
Jobim's melodies and recasts them for a new audience. ~ Chris Nickson
