This 2014 release isn't to be confused with A Motown Christmas, which came out in 1973. Produced by
Aaron Lindsey, a Grammy-winning contemporary gospel producer,
Motown Christmas is a thoughtful compilation with some imaginative pairings, including Tasha Cobbs and
Ne-Yo ("The Christmas Song"),
Anita Wilson and
Gregory Porter ("Go Tell It on the Mountain/Ain't No Mountain High Enough"), Kierra Sheard and
Chrisette Michelle ("Angels We Have Heard on High"), and Gene Moore, Jr. and
India.Arie ("Mary Did You Know"). Other highlights come from high-profile gospel artists such as
VaShawn Mitchell ("Silent Night"),
Smokie Norful ("O Holy Night"), and
Tye Tribbett (who provides what has to be one of the most energetic versions of "Little Drummer Boy" recorded). ~ Andy Kellman
