Márcia Salomon is a young singer who opens a large scope of possibilities in her opening album. Unprejudiced to the point of dedicating a couple of tracks to rock, she is nevertheless very respectful of the rich Brazilian tradition, which puts her several notches above her average competitors. In fact, it is a considerable challenge to record a real MPB album, knowing that Brazil has been generous in providing such talented icons serving as measurement. It is much easier to record some disposable hits, make lots of money, and vanish in the dust of the next summer, which has been the day-to-day routine of new singers. Not
Salomon's though. In this release (dedicated to the expressive, deep, philosophical lyrics of J. C. Costa Netto), she explores ballads, Brazilian songs, sambas, rock, blues, and several other styles with a pungent artistic sincerity and versatile singing competence. "Paulista" and "Verde," both melodies written by Eduardo Gudin, expose what can be understood as a true expansion of Brazilian popular music in its most contemporary, cosmopolitan setting, the city of São Paulo.
Salomon can be understood as a "traditionalist," in terms, as she hadn't adhered to the more or less modern experimentations of the pop vanguard (how can such a thing exist?) of that city, but she has enough personality to provide high-level performances for excellent songs, backed by some of the best session men in Brazil.
