Even after repeated listens to their
Musicogenic EP, it's impossible to discern whether Swiss group
MXD's music qualifies as hard rock inflected with electronica, or electronica infused with hard rock. Not that it matters, since tracks like "Powder Mind," "Le Pire," and "Clean-Ex" (alternately melodically sung and gravelly whispered in both English and French) tend to maintain a dancefloor-ambivalent, mid-paced groove that is unlikely to affect the pulse of either clubbers or rockers. And neither will the heavy percussion of "Defoliant" or the metal guitar-driven "Charlie Brown," which is simply too indebted to German industrialists
Rammstein for inspiration to be forgiven. Bottom line is: mixing and matching such disparate styles is all fine and good, but many other bands have been there and done that way before
MXD's competent, but rather derivative efforts. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
