Andy Mineo's third full-length Never Land II combines the rapper's typically introspective and poignant lyricism with some of the best production choices in his catalog, resulting in one of his most accessible and satisfying albums to date. Pulling off the mainstream-but-make-it-spiritual approach better than Kanye West, Mineo delivers substance in droves, tackling social injustice, religious hypocrisy, and political strife, often in the same song. On "Falling?" he calls out the fellow faithful who put judgement before Jesus' love ("Jesus, save me from Christians/The ones that stay forgettin'") before imploring, "Before you hold a stone, you should hold a mirror." Blockbuster collaborations with Lecrae ("Been About It" and "Coming in Hot") find both rappers firing on all cylinders, popping wordy bars over bass-heavy production courtesy of SAK PASE. Another collaboration, this time reuniting Mineo with his Magic & Bird co-star Wordsplayed, provides the third standout in as many tracks with the menacing "You Know the Drill." Turning inward, "Nobody's Coming" goes deep by unearthing Mineo's emotions and memories of his absent dad (a short recollection from his mother explains things on "New Father"), while "Cross My Heart" digs into lessons learned during the COVID-19 quarantine period. He also takes the time to make a few introspective confessions on "Trying" and "Working on It," which lay bare his all-too-human struggles with work-life balance and married life. Never Land II is vibrant, immediate, and extremely catchy, pushing Mineo further to the top of the faith-centric rap pack.
