The eight-member Tiffany Consort, conducted by composer Nicholas White, was nominated for a Grammy for its 2006 collection O Magnum Mysterium. The group's second release, In Sure and Certain Hope, is devoted to White's own works. His service music is very much in the tradition of Anglican liturgical music, but in his anthems he is freer to explore a broader expressive range. His anthems most closely resemble the works of Morten Lauridsen in their voice leading and in their rich and sumptuous harmonies. White is particularly effective in the pieces accompanied by string ensemble, Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis; Bitter-sweet, based on a poem by George Herbert; and the multi-movement In Sure and Certain Hope, which is essentially a requiem that uses selections from the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer rather than the traditional requiem texts. White's serene settings are simple without being simplistic, fulfilling the difficult task that faces composers writing for the church: creating pieces that are direct enough to be useful for the average congregation, but that aren't facile, and have enough complexity to keep them musically interesting. The Tiffany Consort sings with sweet, pure tone and with sensitivity to the nuances of the texts. The recording is clean, with just enough resonance to maximize the ensemble's sound.
