These two openly gay artists, Patrick Arena and Andy Monroe, have produced an hour's worth of gentle, soothing and uneventful music. The intent is clear: to create an album for a soothing backdrop as the listener goes through a night time ritual used to close out the day. This is lounge music at its best or worst, depending on the position on that form of musical entertainment. A playlist of nine standards and three originals crawl along at a very slow pace. Patrick Arena's Johnny Mathis-type voice rarely departs from its slow, moving delivery. Any energy that is created on this session is through the accompanying piano of Andy Monroe who gets jazzy from time to time adding some lilt to the proceedings. An occasion where Arena's vocalizing become animated is on his own amusing "Angel Wants Out of Heaven." Steve Sandberg shows up on one track with his harmonica to accompany Arena on a very moving "Nature Boy." There's a little vigor in "Willow Weep for Me" about half way through, but it doesn't last long. A major problem is with either the mixing or mic placement. Arena's voice is overwhelmed by Monroe's piano on most tracks to the point of almost drowning him out. If you're looking for some pretty, relaxed background music for reading or dining, this album can serve that purpose.
