Trombonist
Ian McDougall's live date at the Cellar in Vancouver features several of Canada's top jazz musicians playing a bop-oriented set.
McDougall has a warm sound and fluent technique on trombone, and he blends in well with tenor saxophonist
Ross Taggart. Guitarist Oliver Gannon is a cool-toned veteran, while pianist Ron Johnston is lesser known outside of Canada but just as talented. The sextet plays three standards, including a trombone ballad feature on "Polka Dots and Moonbeams" and four basic originals, including a pair of blues. Fans of bebop will find this CD easy to like and should enjoy discovering these "new" players. ~ Scott Yanow
