There's not a whole lot of information to go by with the first vinyl release from
Body Boys, but what is immediately apparent is that this record is a far cry from the act's 2013 debut tape Growth Window. While that cassette consisted of hazy dark ambience filled with spooky whispered voices,
No Face immediately switches into a different gear, with a thick, thumping kick drum appearing at the record's onset. The background ambience is relatively still, while the beats are busy, detailed, and commanding, and when voices do appear, they cut in and out and appear to be discussing some sort of breathing instructions. Second track "Alone" features a mist-like trace of vocodered vocals blending into the lush synths and kicking, shuffling beats. "Yunnan" is the album's sole purely ambient piece, and even with the incomprehensible voices murmuring away, it still feels more serene and focused than the more haunting cassette. "Nosebleed" is swirling and precise, and feels like being cornered by a mysterious floating cloud of knives. The album simultaneously feels upfront and focused as well as detached and ominous, making for an arresting, thrilling listen. ~ Paul Simpson
