Pacific Northwesterners Nigel Barnes and Rian Callahan are surface opposites (the former burly and tough, the latter less imposing and more introspective), but together they’ve composed a succinct, quietly pretty work of ambience. Split up between two discs, NORTH is all warped, droning guitar loops, gentle crackling, and hushed background melody, all courtesy of almost childlike, gadgety equipment. It’s ostensibly an amateurish take on the tradition of everyone from Tangerine Dream to Stars Of The Lid, but with surprisingly moving results.
