Teddy Wilson frequently recorded with a trio following the demise of his short-lived experiment with leading an orchestra. The undated
On Tour session was likely recorded during a tour of Europe with bassist
Arvell Shaw and drummer
Bert Dahlander,
Wilson's regular rhythm section during that period. There are no surprises in this live set, as all but one of the songs (
Frank Foster's "Shiny Stockings") are standards that
Wilson had played regularly for some time. Although the record jacket lists the songs individually, "Body and Soul" and "Sweet Lorraine" are combined in a brief medley. Like many releases on the Charlie Parker label, the sound quality is less than ideal, as there is some distortion and the stereo sound is likely the inferior electronically re-channeled pseudostereo that seemed obligatory of many releases up into the mid-'60s. In any case,
Wilson plays with his usual elegant, light touch, and
Shaw has several fine solos. This long out of print LP falls short of essential in the sizable
Wilson discography, but it is worth purchasing if found in a bargain bin in excellent shape.
