Optimistic Fool probably never stood a chance of being as good as the Pooh Sticks' earlier work -- the entire musical inside-joke that the band was based on was bound to fade in time -- but it's a fine record nonetheless: the setting for all of the Sticks' cheeky rock satires has always been solid and ludicrously catchy pop, and Optimistic Fool turns out the hooks as well as any of the band's other releases. ~ Nitsuh Abebe
