The Paris-based Rectangle label seems pretty open-minded about what formats they will work in, and have released not only compact discs and full-size albums but a series of 10" EPs, of which this tasty compilation is one. The theme here seems to be duos of saxophone and bass, of which there are four different combinations featured. Opening and closing pieces are adaptations of themes by other composers while the other pieces seem to be spontaneously composed works by the players. Some listeners may be partial to the opening track just because it is an
Albert Ayler tune, and it is true that this free jazz great's compositions can add that something special to a disc. All the players sound fine and all are adventurous and creative, which are pretty much prerequisites for recording on this label. The packaging and concept are creative in themselves, showing that there are many possible ways to present music such as this; compilations don't have to be just for punk rock groups.
