Album number two from this Atlanta quartet (to go with two EPs) opens itself to ridicule with its title. To be sure, they're about as trad by numbers as indie guitar rock gets in terms of guitar sounds, simple chord changes, grooves, and overall approach. And overall, these 13 songs don't seem to stray far from the home base of mid-tempo, loud, buzz-and-ring guitars rock. Yet they've got sociable frontwoman Michelle Friedman to transport their selections out of the ordinary, with the small sass, girly-girl voice, and a little of the brio that made Juliana Hatfield a favorite in Blake Babies babe days. Friedman grabs hold of the ameliorating melodies and makes them graceful, inviting, and blanket-warm, making Yum Yum Tree as sugar-spun as the candy they give out at shows. ~ Jack Rabid
