Grover Washington, Jr.'s music combined elements of funk, pop, soul, R&B, and of course, jazz stylings. He played a less complex and intellectually driven, more audience-friendly version of jazz. Visceral and romantic, Washington's music continues to sell impressive numbers of CDs even after his untimely death in 1999.

This 1979 release features Washington in his earlier years. The music on PARADISE is not as slick as on later albums, and synthesizers and drum machines have yet to be incorporated into his sound--many of the tunes heard on this album are more fusion-oriented. Washington and violinist John E. Blake, Jr. share the spotlight on most selections, and the two musicians play with great musical empathy. Highlights include the bossa nova "The Answer in Your Eyes," and the funky "Tell Me About it Now."
