Not only does
Michael Mayer represent the Kompakt label as one of its behind-the-scenes-players, but he exemplifies the label in that he very rarely repeats himself as a producer by approaching his work with a very open mind. The
Pensum 12" is his second vinyl release for Kompakt, and it contains two propulsive tech-house tracks on the A-side with a solitary number on the B-side that's minimal and wicked (somewhat confoundingly, these tracks are not given titles). The A-side's opening track has enough going on that it's easy to lose track of the 4/4 beat, as it employs a number of elements that either follow the beat or counter it. The A-side's other track changes modes a number of times, containing an unintrusively buzzing bassline and lots of percussive lines. Once you make your way to a sparingly placed melody, the track reaches full bloom.
