Perfect Flux Thing was
Jeremy Toback's major-label, solo debut following an independent EP and his work with
Pearl Jam spin-off
Brad. Unlike
Brad, the music on
Perfect Flux Thing is decidedly more low-key and reminiscent of
Pearl Jam's more stripped-down efforts. The emphasis is on an organic, acoustic approach augmented by heavily rhythmic percussion and even hints of blues ("Blood White Gold").
Toback's vocals are similar to
Eddie Vedder, but, in keeping with the music, minus the arena-strength delivery. The lyrics tend toward introspective and slightly esoteric, but rarely do they become overly ponderous.
Perfect Flux Thing is a well-done effort that is intimate and compelling, revealing more with repeated listens. Especially noteworthy are the folk-tinged "Butterfly Elephant," the title track (which recalls
Dave Matthews), and the driving "Eden Trampoline." ~ Tom Demalon
