This album specifically showcases the vocal chorus tradition of the small island of Rurutu. The tradition is based on a mix of ancient native singing and Maohi hymns, as well as Protestant themes by way of the various missionaries. The sound is somewhat similar to many other Polynesian vocal styles, from Tonga in particular. Despite the similarity however, there are several differences. The complete chorus has a sound not quite as polyphonic as some of the others, and makes use of essentially off-key singers for highlighting purposes, similar to some African styles. For Polynesian music in general, this album is a welcome addition to collections for the sheer rarity of works from Rurutu. At the same time, Tongan and Tahitian works will be much more accessible to newcomers to the Polynesian vocal traditions. ~ Adam Greenberg
