Population 1975,
the Butchies' second album, continues the string of musically and emotionally rewarding projects involving singer/guitarist/songwriter
Kaia Wilson (who, of course, first made her name with queercore godmothers
Team Dresch, as did drummer
Melissa York). The album isn't so much a vast improvement on
Are We Not Femme? -- a fine record as it was -- as a consolidation of its strengths. The songs are, as always, firmly rooted in Wilson's sexuality and politics, but the writing employs a richly diverse emotional spectrum, and the experiences are universally human, avoiding the potential pitfall of repetitive dogma. Really, everything Wilson has done is worth hearing.
