For his third time out, Erasmo Catarino significantly narrows his focus, honing in on his true blue, loyal regional Mexican music fan base. His previous releases have cast a wide net, appealing to as wide of an audience as possible. Erasmo: El Conde de Xalpatlahuac (2005) and its follow-up, A Toda Banda (2006) including a variety of styles, which made sense. Erasmo's first task would be to capitalize on the enormous exposure that his win on the fourth season of La Academia brought him, and that would involve a little something for everyone: a little Latin rock, a pop ballad here, a little ranchera there. Much like his album covers, Erasmo's music has increasingly become unapologetically mexicano. Por un Amor is banda from start to finish. Even the cumbia material is fueled by the thumping tuba and adorned with the silky horn lines that characterize Erasmo's beloved traditional sound. Produced by Omar "Pony" Loredo in his Sinaloa studio, Erasmo's third original release has washed itself clean of any poppy shine present in previous projects. Erasmo has also come into his own as a vocalist, and Por un Amor finds him at his most confident. The timbre of his voice is thicker, more present than in previous years. With this disc Erasmo seems to have successfully escaped from La Academia's grasp, at least artistically. The style and repertoire on Por un Amor seem to be an excellent fit. Comfortable musicians make good music, and this instance is no exception.
