Aerosmith and
Cheap Trick as their musical foundation,
Toys in the Attic never had the paranoid anger of
Primer and songs like "Over Your Shoulder" and "Gravity"; nor did
Rick Nielsen's guitar ever sound as abrasive as
Chris Henrich's. However, the band's pop/metal aspirations are evident on the guitar hooks of "Don't Even Care" and the anthemic chorus of "Live a Lie."
Primer is filled with the type of songs with sharp instrumentation and subtle melodic hooks that are appreciated after successive listens -- in other words, it's a grower.
