British DJ and tastemaker Gilles Peterson has put together yet another sampler from his deep assortment of crates. This time he focuses on jazz released on Impulse during that label's golden years in the 1960s. While this may not seem like a revelatory achievement on Peterson's part, the compilation does, in fact, live up to the title PURE FIRE. Archie Shepp, John Coltrane, Art Blakey, and Yusef Lateef are only a few of the artists featured, and the music represents a dynamic cross-section of post-bop, modal, and free jazz influence. As a result, PURE FIRE plays like a time capsule of Impulse's best period, but it also offers a timeless set of superior music and musicianship.
