A year later, Azteca gave it another go, straightening out their twisted lines and sanding off their rough edges on Pyramid of the Moon. They're still a horn-accentuated Latin rock band but they now hue closer to Chicago than Santana, a commercial consideration that's not entirely unappealing. There are still elements of bossa nova and polyrhythms but there is also a slickness that's impossible to avoid, and it's superficially attractive. Thing is, beneath this gloss there aren't any big pop hooks -- they kind of invert Booker T. & the MG's with "Red Onions" and do give it their all with pop tunes like "Love Is a Stranger," but the record yo-yos between dyed-in-the-wool statements of purpose and unbaked crossovers, so it winds up satisfying neither audience. [The 2013 BBR reissue contains the single version of "Whatcha Gonna Do" as a bonus track.]
