QUINCUX is a terrific collection of pieces by a variety of Belgian composers, performed impeccably by the chamber ensemble Champ d'Action. 'Time Before and Time After' uses the metaphor of evolution in an ingenious way: slowly unfolding pitch changes are used in a near-static sound field marked by glissandi and a fetching, beautifully played Ligeti-like pointillism. 'Trajet,' for piano and ensemble, employs an original approach: as the piece develops the piano and the ensemble become less cooperative, resulting in a work of varied emotional temperaments.

The work is particularly memorable for the intricate and difficult piano passages, deftly played by Johan Bossers. 'Stille and Lärm' highlights a wandering piano that can't seem to find its stride as it traverses the keyboard. It's an almost comical piece with its deliberate uses of disconnected themes. It's no surprise that the inspiration for the work is Erik Satie. 'Inert Reacting Substances of ( )' uses a rhythmic polyphony to convey a sound world of continuous disruption, alternately chaotic and placid, with an ever-present underpinning of slow-moving winds, while 'Apeiron' is best described as an extremely abstract work with an intertwining texture of intense timbres and stop-go tempos.
