It is clear from the beginning of the brief but potent opener "Slidell" that
Tom Schmidt's music is full of spirit. An avant-garde date with catchy vehicles for group and solo improvising (all of which were composed by the leader-drummer), the emphasis is often on extroverted emotions and eccentric rhythms. While the rhythm section (which includes bassist Fima Ephron) sets forceful grooves, trombonist
Steve Swell often roars,
Randy McKean provides unique and passionate tones on alto and clarinet and guitarist Marvin Sewell plays some intense rockish solos. The music is rather episodic (the 10½-minute "Blues for Noam" goes through several unpredictable sections) and, as with the best avant-garde recordings, the musicians are not afraid of stating some melodies and varying the moods. Each selection seems to have its own purpose, with the picturesque ballad "Riverwalk" wrapping up the session quite nicely. Well worth several listens. ~ Scott Yanow
