One of many ragtime LPs put out by Folkways in the 1970s, this particular album has 16 solo and duet piano performances by 17 different early pianists. The first recording, Mike Bernard playing "Everybody Two-Step" on Dec. 2, 1912, is considered the earliest documentation of a solo pianist on record playing ragtime. Most of the other performances on this album are by novelty ragtime (rather than jazz) pianists, and all but Arthur Schutt are today quite obscure. Collectors and fans of early American music will be interested in searching for this album despite the lack of exact recording dates.
