Yet another Free Design collection from the Spanish Siesta label, Raindrops may just be the best of the bunch. The collection does an excellent job of showing off all sides of the soft pop band. Free Design could be a rather button-down 1960s vocal group, an off-kilter experimental act brimming over with sonic invention, a sugary kiddy act, or a combination of all these elements. Their dazzling, ultra baroque cover of "59th Street Song (Feelin' Groovy)" shows how much future "cutting edge" bands such as Stereolab and Broadcast have taken from the supposedly square band while "Where Do I Go" and "Make the Madness Stop" paint a bleaker picture of the 1960s than anything in the Stones catalogue. "Canada in the Spring" brims over with so much sunny enthusiasm that it contains the power to get even the most jaded and bitter of rock ironists to pack their picnic baskets and head for the park That said, the insipid "You Are My Sunshine" is so evilly banal that a single listen could turn freewheeling hippy co-eds into casserole serving Stepford Wives in a matter of seconds. If you added such essential Free Design tracks as "Kites Are Fun" and "My Brother Woody" to Raindrops and you'd have the finest single disc representation of the band on the market.
