Dexterity has never been a calling card of Puddle of Mudd’s, nor has cleverness, two traits that invariably come in handy whenever a band does a covers album. No, POM’s defining characteristic is plodding deliberateness, how the band goes from points A to B with a heavy heavy foot. They can’t shed this trait for Re:(disc)overed, their cumbersomely titled 2011 covers album, nor do they really try. They simply play classic rock standards as straightforwardly as possible, copying the guitar solos from Free’s “All Right Now,” twisting “Gimme Shelter” into standard tuning, straightening out the rhythms of “Funk #49,” and barreling through Billy Squier. These aren’t reinterpretations, they’re re-creations, and POM are competent, certainly more competent than they are with their own songs, yet by playing these songs with their heads down and blinders on they sound like little more than a local bar band on a Wednesday night.
