In an attempt to make sense of one's identity in this topsy-turvy world, Mx Blouse (Sandiso Ngubane)’s debut EP Re: Mx grapples with issues of self-understanding and self-worth as a young, black and queer-identifying person. Revisiting the glory days of kwaito, Mx Blouse draws on stylistic elements of legends like Trompies and Boom Shaka, adding a unique spin which is then honed by the meticulous production of Cape Town producers Thor Rixon (“Piesang Kop”, “Papgeld” and “Isikokela”) and Parabyl (“Nini”). The finished product is a reminder to live as the most authentic version of yourself, a modern message with bright smatterings of gqom and pop steeped in a strong cultural heritage.
