This is the album Barbra Streisand fans have been waiting for. Release Me compiles previously unreleased gems that Streisand herself extracted from her vault. (She controls most everything she’s ever recorded.) To provide an intimate setting, Streisand also left in some studio chatter that was caught on tape; it sounds as if the listener is sitting with an engineer at the mixing board. The recording quality for the opening “Being Good Isn't Good Enough” nearly rivals Streisand’s command performance. Even though it was taken from the 1967 sessions for the Broadway musical Hallelujah, Baby!, the classic analog fidelity resonates with more depth and dimension than most modern recordings. Streisand shows amazing control of her voice as she balances restraint with bombast in a loungy, breezy cover of Ann Ronell’s Willow Weep for Me. But it’s the orchestrally trimmed ballad "With One More Look at You" from A Star Is Born and her take on Randy Newman’s “I Think It’s Going to Rain Today” (with Newman on piano) where she sounds most in her natural element.
