An all-star roster of remixers, most of them hip-hop-oriented, give the downbeat soundscapes of
DJ Cam their own personal twists on
Revisited By. Kenny Dope,
Thievery Corporation,
Kid Loco,
DJ Premier,
DJ Vadim,
Bob Sinclair,
Lord Finesse,
J Dilla,
4hero -- you couldn't ask for a more stellar lineup, or a more relevant one, as many of these guys specialize in the sort of beatwork comprising the essence of
Cam's work. So if remix albums are judged by the talent at hand, this one is first-rate. Or if remix albums are judged by the fruits of the labor, this one is likewise first-rate. Not only is the talent here; the roster fulfills its promise, resulting in a baker's dozen of head-nodders, only a few of which are so-so. Moreover, several tracks feature rappers, which makes the remixes feel less like remixes and more like traditional productions, and most feature the trademark characteristics of their remixers, which should satisfy those who approach this disc because of the all-star roster. On the other hand, some
DJ Cam aficionados may be disappointed by the extent to which these remixers make the tracks their own. Such disappointment would be beside the point, however: one doesn't hire such producers as
J Dilla or
DJ Premier unless one desires the obvious outcome. If only all remix projects were this enjoyable. In fact, it's occasionally more enjoyable than the work of
DJ Cam himself. ~ Jason Birchmeier
