A hard-driving Latin album, Rhumba with Machito is undoubtedly the chart work of Chico O'Farrill. Although sounding like the Manteca period of Gillespie and Machito, Rhumba is essentially Latin, except perhaps for "St. Louis Blues" and "Hall of the Mambo King." Yet its solos and pace are too brash and forceful to make for easy dancing (even "Tea for Two"). The treatment of "In the Hall of the Mountain King" is the most memorable (later the Time and Command crowd would strip it down for their stereo ping-ponging).
