This CD is rather vague as to its recording date, but since pianist George Gaffney (best known for his association with
Sarah Vaughan) died in 2002, it is probably from the year before. A straight-ahead bop date, the quartet features guitarist John Chiodini and Gaffney as the main solo voices, with bassist Jim Hughart and drummer Harold Jones offering swinging support. Most of the material is comprised of jazz standards and, although nothing all that surprising occurs, the overall results should please straight-ahead jazz fans, serving as a fine tribute to the late George Gaffney. ~ Scott Yanow
