If you didn’t know how to pronounce Kevin Rolly’s last name (“Ro-lee,” like the colloquial abbreviation for Rolex watches), the producer tag at the top of each selection from Rude will set you straight. The beatsmith, who has acted as a sort of engine for a subset of his native Toronto’s rap scene, kicks things into overdrive on Rude, the follow-up to 2019’s Friends. His growth as a producer notwithstanding, Rude could very well have been called Friends Part 2, as there are plenty of Rolly’s most frequent collaborators present (Yung Tory, Jaay Cee, Yung Jizzel), plus an appearance from Atlanta hitmaker K CAMP (“Lined Up”). The project, though, is a showcase of Rolly’s range, delivering sparse 808 knock (“Rude/Interlude”), a hybridized trap/metal concoction (“Skulls”), and even an acoustic-guitar-driven R&B ballad (“Broken Promises”), all of which are bound to help get his name out there.
