It is almost impossible to listen to this album without a sense of heartbreak. At the time it was recorded, the country of Rwanda seemed at peace, and an album like this that featured the musical styles of all three peoples who lived there -- the Hutu, Tutsi, and Twi -- fit the mood of national pride and cooperation. A song like the uplifting "Rubijizuko," which exhorted listeners to "put all of your abilities and power in building the country," seemed to be an anthem for a bright and inevitable future. By the time the album was released, the country was in the middle of a genocide followed by a civil war, and the very idea of the various peoples getting together and dancing was inconceivable. The only reminder that it was once considered possible is this album, which features Cecile Kayirebwa's gorgeous vocals over a background of thumb piano, bamboo trumpets, and other exotic instruments. The songs are in the various local languages and dialects, but no translation is necessary to tell the work songs and lullabies from the dance tunes and anthems. Kayirebwa's voice is an extraordinary and emotional instrument, and she put every bit of passion into this hopeful recording. Perhaps someday Rwanda will become peaceful enough that the dreams expressed throughout this album will become reality. Until then, this CD will keep the hope alive.
