SACRED SPACES is a sublime and gentle recording that mixes Stephen DeRuby's ethereal flute playing with a host of other instruments, including the Chinese harp, and the hammered dulcimer. The music is backed by hypnotic percussion. DeRuby and his wife are extraordinary flute makers who create their own instruments from their home in San Diego, California. They have devoted their lives to music and are influenced by Native American and Far Eastern cultures. These influences are readily apparent in the music on SACRED SPACES. Each track evokes a sparse, minimalist feeling yet is rich in meaning. DeRuby has mastered the pregnant pauses that give his music such tension and interest. He has created a beautiful recording, while also introducing the listener to unknown inner spaces. DeRuby does more than play his flute, he uses studio overdubbing to create entire flute choirs like voices conversing over a tapestry of lush instrumentals. "Revelation" uses this technique to stunning effect as two flutes duet over strings and ambient percussion. SACRED SPACES is ideal for inspiring creativity, soulful meditation, and healing work.
