Sangria is a rather developmental record -- unfortunately, it bears none of the dynamic and soulful tendencies of the band's later releases, instead taking on a pop sheen that never achieves the depth or drama of its successors. The album may be appealing to true adherents of the band, but for most listeners it's simply a warm-up, an unremarkable first step toward
Throneberry's later work. ~ Nitsuh Abebe
