Seasons of My Soul is een verassend zelfverzekerd eerste aanbod, geïnspireerd door de jaren 30-standards van Rodgers & Hammerstein, de gospel-soul van Laura Nyro en de easy listening-popmuziek van Dusty Springfield. Er is geen ontkomen aan het feit dat Rumer haar smoothe en warme klank een nauwe gelijkenis met Karen Carpenter vertoont, vooral op de gelaagde harmoniezang van “Blackbird” en de melancholische ballad “On My Way Home.” Haar werelds gebrachte zang, gecombineerd met een aantal hoogstpersoonlijke teksten en luxueuze orkestrale productie van Steve Brown, tillen dit album naar een hoger plan dan het niveau van een halfbakken tribuutalbum. Het tempo ligt nooit erg hoog, maar Seasons of My Soul blijft op indrukwekkende wijze fris en intrigerend over de hele linie.
