"Secret" was the first single from
Madonna's
Bedtime Stories album, which was a much warmer set than its cold and carnal predecessor
Erotica. The song was a hit, peaking at number three on the U.S. pop charts, and the single (whose cover art finds
Madonna looking her most Jean Harlow-esque) came equipped with several remixes, most notably the famous
Junior Vasquez dance mixes, which became almost as well-known as the original. The single kicks off with the edited album version, which simply fades out earlier than the original. That is followed by two versions of "Junior's Luscious Mix," those being a single edit and the long version, which, complete with a piano intro, turns the original organic/guitar-flavored song into a dancefloor epic. Her vocals were re-edited to fit in with the faster beats, which gives them something of a robotic, detached feel that the original doesn't have. Junior's "Sound Factory Mix" takes the song one step further, with swirling instrumentals recalling flashing lights in a nightclub. The only shortcoming is that the vocals, layered over the dance beats, sound a tad clumsy. The "Some Bizarre Mix" gives the song a groovier, funkier spin, while the final version, the "Allstar Mix," gives the song a cold, hip-hop feel. This single is a good package, complete with six different versions, which, unfortunately, at times sound a bit clumsy, but could pack many a dancefloor nonetheless.
