Nicki French had a unexpected hit single with her dance-club, house-inflected cover of
Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart." Although it was treated like a novelty at first, the version was as effective as the original and was a deserved success.
French didn't have any other hits from her debut album,
Secrets, but that isn't entirely surprising. Instead of being filled with pop-oriented dance singles,
Secrets is primarily devoted to beats, making it appeal to clubgoers instead of a Top 40 audience. The production and the rhythms are very good, and should appeal to many dance fans. Nevertheless, for most listeners it's hard to sustain interest throughout an entire album without a good hook or two.
