Despite
Great White still recording and touring circa 1999 (although admittedly, with a much lower profile than their heyday ten years prior), longtime singer/leader
Jack Russell found it necessary to issue his first ever solo album that same year,
Shelter Me. Anyone thinking that the reason for this sudden solo outing is because
Russell wanted to try taking on some different musical styles (than what he's known for) will be sadly mistaken -- it's the same melodic,
Zeppelin rock that he's made a career of for two decades by this point. In fact, such tracks as the album-opening title track "You'll Lose a Good Thing," and the power ballad "Leave Me Lonely" are so
Great White-esque that it's almost impossible to tell the two apart. As a result, only
Great White fans will be drawn to
Shelter Me. ~ Greg Prato
