Intocable moved on to become one of the best-selling Texas conjuntos of the new millennium, yet most of the ingredients for their success are already evident here. Divided evenly between covers and
Ricky Muñoz' originals, this disc is unpretentious and authentic. Lyrics-wise it's all romantic pablum, but the band is amazingly tight and inventive. Bassist Sivestre Rodríguez and drummer René Orlando Martínez constantly dance around the beat yet remain in lockstep with each other.
Muñoz' echo-drenched accordion and slightly somnambulant vocals create a gritty nocturnal atmosphere that pervades the whole disc. At this point,
Intocable was clearly a band that had paid its dues, and if you close your eyes you can almost picture yourself at one of those innumerable barrio dances they must have played to get this good. They would eventually trade in their vintage '80s uniforms for rougher (and, ironically, more expensive) cowboy getup, but they probably never sounded harder than this. ~ J. Chandler
