The Snapdaddys first came together when Stan Ayeroff arranged for a
Django Reinhardt-style band for a commercial jingle. He liked what he heard and the guitar-violin-reeds-bass quartet was formed.
Brad Dutz adds percussion, vibes and marimba to some selections with bassoonist Leslie Lashinsky guesting on "Leslie Leaps In." While the Snapdaddys sometimes recall the
Quintet of the Hot Club of France, they are not bound by that group's repertoire or style, often sounding more modern. In fact, all but two selections are Ayeroff originals. Still, the spirit of
Reinhardt and
Stéphane Grappelli can be heard in the joyful swing, with guitarist Ayeroff and violinist Sid Page both emulating the past masters and infusing the music with their own personalities. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
