North Americans likely first heard Argentine guitarist
Enrique Coria after he joined
the David Grisman Quintet. Not long after
Coria joined the group,
Grisman encouraged
Coria to record a solo date for his Acoustic Disc label. The guitarist's first CD is a brilliant cornucopia of works by South American composers from many different countries, each of which is identified (along with the specific rhythm of the piece). As a result, the music may not be at all familiar to many
Grisman fans, but its lyricism and
Coria's brilliant performances will engage the listener almost immediately. It becomes apparent why no additional musicians were hired for the sessions, for they would have been unnecessary alongside a virtuoso the level of
Enrique Coria as he lovingly explored this fascinating South American music. ~ Ken Dryden
