B.o.B follows Southmatic, where he riffed on rap classics from the latter half of the '80s through most of the '90s, with another conceptual release. There's no such nostalgia on Somnia, made early into the COVID-19 pandemic with the intent to provide late-night accompaniment for solitary listeners. There's little reflection or anything resembling a reckoning with the situation. "I need curbside service" is about it. Instead, Somnia is a woozy escapist fantasyland soundtracked by downtempo productions with booming 808s and vaporous synthesizers. B.o.B's subjects rarely deviate from good weed, strong drinks, stronger pills, compliant women, and fast cars, all of which have a numbing effect.
