Corina Bartra is a very intriguing singer. A native of Peru who mostly performs in Spanish (although there are a few English language vocals on this CD), she sings, scats, and improvises jazz while using Afro-Peruvian rhythms. On Son Zumbon, she is heard with a quintet that consists of pianist Tino Derado, bassist Oscar Stagnaro, drummer Vince Cherico, percussionist Fred Berrihill, and the versatile reeds (tenor, soprano, and flute) of Peter Brainin. Ranging from four originals by the singer and a few group originals to Pepe Vasquez' catchy "No Valentin" and "Green Dolphin Street," the music utilizes tricky rhythms (some from Peruvian music, some from jazz), the leader's haunting and passionate voice, and plenty of short solos from Brainin. There is no lack of intensity to the program and it is worth several listens to be able to really get into this unusual music.
